Cindy Herrmann: You need to get your temper under control. Now, maybe we should use what we just went through to do better.

Cindy Herrmann: Going forward, maybe be a little more kind?

Herrmann: I guess I could take it down a notch.

Cindy Herrmann: Yeah. You know, at the chemo center, there was this nurse, Nina.

Herrmann: Yeah?

Cindy Herrmann: She showed me some breathing exercises to help control anxiety and stress.

Herrmann: That's good. I gotta go to work.

Cindy Herrmann: You find a comfortable place to sit. Close your eyes... Take a breath in... And then you breathe out. And you do that until you feel calm.

Herrmann: Who's got time for that?

Cindy Herrmann: No, just try it.

Herrmann: Done. I feel better already.

Cindy Herrmann: Don't you sass me. You could try it at work. There are apps you can download that guide you through. Meditation apps too.

Brett: Dylan claims the kids were very impressed with my magic show. I don't believe him, but he's sweet to say so.

Violet: We have to break the sac right away to get your baby breathing.

Brett: I need the scalpel.

Violet: Brett, there's no OB kit in the jump bag. There's no bulb syringe and no clamps.

Brett: Well, we gotta clamp the cord and... And suction her somehow.

Brett: I don't know.

Hannah Asher: Okay, get me a warmer and crack the neonatal resuscitation cart in Trauma 3. Let's go.

Nurse: Copy.

Violet: You wanna wait, see how the little girl does?

Brett: No. No, let's do the paperwork and go. That OB kit should have been there. It would have made the difference.

Test proctor: You will have 10 minutes and 20 seconds to complete all eight events in the Candidate Physical Ability Test. You must wear your hard hat, work gloves, and 50-pound weighted vest the entire time.

Lawson: This thing doesn't exactly breathe, does it?

Test proctor: This is a pass/fail test. If you are disqualified in any event, your test will be concluded, and you will fail. Lawson.

Mouch: Come on. Some of these firefighter shows are a total crock. That guy had a beard. How you supposed to get a seal on a mask with a beard? Do they not care about the truth?

Carver: Gallo, how's your aunt doing?

Gallo: You know, so far, things are pretty smooth. She's healing really well with no major medication.

Ritter: You know I hate to boost your ego, but that wouldn't be the case if it wasn't for you.

Herrmann: This idiot from maintenance still hasn't shown up! I... I don't know what it is that these maintenance guys do all day, but it is not repair rigs. Ah! Do you guys think that I got a temper problem?

All: No. You? No, no. Not at all.

Herrmann: Cindy, she dressed me down real good this morning and said that I should have come through this whole cancer journey a better man.

Carver: Huh?

Herrmann: Oh, yeah.

Gallo: Yeah, probably so.

Herrmann: And she even suggested that I do some breathing exercises and all that, you know, meditation-cult kinda stuff.

Ritter: Hey, don't knock it till you try it. That stuff can do some serious good.

Kidd: Yeah, there's a group I know, Holistic Life Foundation. They're proof it can work. They do a lot of amazing work in the public schools. One school in Baltimore had 100 suspensions per year. Then, after running their Mindful Moment program for two years, there were zero suspensions eight years in a row.

Capp: Mindful Moment? No. Not in my firehouse.

Kidd: You're ridiculous.

Tony: Hey, don't go all woo-woo on us, Herrmann. Keep it together, man.

Brett: And first shift screwed up. They didn't replace the OB kit, so it wasn't there when we needed it. Probably cost a newborn girl her life.

Boden: Why didn't you two do morning inventory?

Violet: The bells went off right at shift change. It said emergency.

Brett: There was no time. We did a quick check out and raced off.

Boden: Okay, I will talk to Adler. She is the PIC. I will find out what the hell is going on.

Dispatch: Truck 81, Ambulance 61...

Boden: Okay.

Dispatch: Motor vehicle accident, 6622 Van Buren.

Driver: This guy came out of nowhere. There was nothing I could do.

Kidd: What guy?

Driver: Over here. I swerved to avoid him, but... You gotta help him. Get him out of there!

Kidd: Let's see if we can slide him out of there.

Gallo: Yeah.

Kidd: Real careful. Okay? One, two, three.

Gallo: Whoa, whoa, Lieutenant. His leg is trapped.

Kidd: Okay, let's get airbags and cribbing. Go!

Gallo: Yep.

Kidd: Okay. Sir? Can you hear me? Okay. We're gonna get you out of here, okay? Now, what's your name?

Shep: Shep. I'm Shep.

Kidd: Shep, I'm Stella. All right? Tell me, how'd this happen?

Shep: These teenagers, they... They were chasing me and trying to rob me, to take my cigarettes. They never leave me alone.

Brett: Lieutenant.

Kidd: Hey. He's conscious and alert.

Brett: I'll grab the stretcher and the backboard, and have the O2 ready.

Kidd: Now, Shep, tell me where it hurts.

Shep: My head.

Kidd: Your head?

Shep: Yeah.

Kidd: Okay. What about your legs?

Shep: No, no. They don't hurt.

Kidd: No pain in your legs?

Shep: Nuh-uh.

Kidd: All right, Mouch, where's that cribbing?

Mouch: Right here.

Kidd: All right... We'll have you out of there in no time, Shep.

Shep: What's it matter? No one cares about me. Not a soul left on Earth.

Kidd: Unbelievable.

Brett: All right, that cut doesn't look too bad. We're gonna take you to Chicago Med, and get it looked at.

Kidd: Well, it looks like you're gonna be okay, Shep.

Shep: Yeah?

Kidd: Yeah. You caught a real break there.

Shep: Thanks, Stella.

Kidd: Glad we could help, Shep.

Violet: Poor guy, getting robbed for all he's got by a bunch of teenagers.

Brett: Life can be incredibly unfair.

Violet: I'm gonna check on something. I'll be right back.

Brett: Sure. Patient was homeless. He didn't have an ID, so I'm just gonna write down the age he told us, et cetera.

Violet: Hey, Brett, the baby girl's alive. She rebounded and is doing really well.

Brett: What?

Violet: Yeah. She's in the maternity ward with her mom right now.

Brett: Oh, my God, that's such a huge relief. Let's go see them.

Violet: Yeah.

Brett: Hey, um, Amber, do you remember us? I'm Sylvie. This is Violet.

Amber: Yeah, I remember. What are you doing here?

Brett: Well, we were just so happy to hear that your little girl was doing well, and we wanted to pay a visit. Is that okay?

Amber: Sure.

Brett: How are you doing?

Amber: Fine.

Violet: Aww, she looks great.

Brett: Aw, she's so beautiful.

Violet: What's her name?

Amber: I haven't given her one yet. The doctor said she's doing good, so.

Brett: Hi. What's going on?

Amber: She's so small.

Brett: 8 pounds, 8 ounces, 22 inches... It's a perfect size.

Amber: Really?

Brett: Really.

Violet: Has your mom been here?

Amber: For a little while, but she had to go to work... Well, thanks for what you did. Cool of you to check in on her.

Brett: We would love that.

Adler: Hey... You got a lot of nerve going after me and Bessel for the missing OB kit. You should have checked inventory before you left.

Violet: Didn't you hear the alarm? It said "emergency."

Adler: I told you what a rough shift we had... Oh, but, of course, Chief Boden will give his favorite shift their special treatment. And we'll get in real trouble for this.

Brett: You were the PIC. A baby girl could have died because of you. It doesn't matter that you were tired. It's your job to make sure we can take care of our patients. That OB kit is the only thing we've got to help the most vulnerable and innocent victims, and it wasn't there. If you don't get charged for this, I will quit.

Adler:Are you serious right now?

Brett: You have no idea how serious I am.

Violet: Okay, let's take a step...

Brett: Get out of this firehouse. Now. This isn't your shift.

Adler: This is my damn house too... Your partner, she's lost it.

Brett: Adler is the PIC. She has a partner, Bessel. She should have handled it if Adler was so incapable. If one of us wasn't on it, the other would cover, right?

Carver: We filed a report about those teenagers, just so you know. Cops took a statement from the truck driver too. So you never know, but maybe...

Boden: No... Instead of starting an investigative review, I have decided to give them both written warnings... If it happens again, it will be a different story.

Brett: What? That's... That's really unfortunate, Chief... It means I'm gonna have to decide if I can continue to work here.

Boden: Is she really considering this?

Violet: I think she is.

Carver: I'm doing a job not too far from there. It'll be easy.

Kylie: Well, I aced the physical.

Kidd: Of course you did.

Kylie: But then when I got to the written test, I kind of panicked.

Kidd: Oh, I know the feeling. Those tests can be so stressful.

Kylie: No, I really panicked. Froze up in the middle and barely finished on time.

Kidd: Oh? Okay. But you finished, right?

Kylie: Barely.

Kidd: Okay.

Kylie: If I failed, please, just don't give up on me, okay?

Kidd: What?

Kylie: I don't want you to think I'm a lost cause. I mean, you put so much time and effort into helping me, and I just wanted to do you proud.

Kidd: Of course... Sometimes things just take time. Doesn't mean they're not gonna happen... I will never give up on you.

Carver: Hi. I'm just dropping these off for a resident named Shep... Don't know his last name.

Bettina: I know who you're talking about.

Carver: Great. So can I just leave them with you?

Bettina: Shep hasn't stayed here in months.

Carver: Oh.

Bettina: When he was on his meds, he was fine. Whenever he got off them, he got scary, especially with female residents. He sent one of them to the hospital, and that's when we kicked him out... We should have done it sooner.

Carver: I know... I mean, hopefully we never see the guy again.

Kidd: But God, I still can't help but feel for the guy... If Kelly were here, he would tell me that I might have gone too far in bonding with my victim... You know, that there are serious risks in making real connections. And he might be right. But I don't know how to do this job any other way.

Carver: Yeah, I mean, I get where Severide's coming from. He's just trying to protect you.

Kidd: Mm.

Carver: But the way you connect with people, victims and coworkers... It... It makes an impact that can change lives for the better... And... I'm speaking from experience.

Boden: May I have everyone's attention, please? I'd like to announce some news I have just received. Kylie Estevez has officially passed her firefighter's test.

Kidd: Yes!

Kylie: No way.

Boden: Way. All you gotta do, wait, hope your number comes up. It's not a final step, but it's a big one.

Kidd: Hell yeah, it is. Tomorrow, we are celebrating at Molly's! And we're gonna make it an 18-and-over event so you all can come.

Boden: That's exactly what I did. Turns out she's got two previous warnings from similar situations, so this was the last straw for her.

Brett: I felt bad seeing her like that. But, uh, I still think forgetting the OB kit is an unforgivable thing for the PIC to do, and if she has previous warnings for the same kind of thing, then she's a risk to her victims' safety, so.

Boden: So... The system worked... The Brett that I saw in this office the other day, that's not the Brett that I know. You wanna tell me what's going on?

Brett: I know... I know I probably overreacted.

Boden: Mm.

Brett: I get too emotional with our littlest victims... I always have.

Boden: We all feel that way. And I've noticed, you more than most, but... This was different.

Brett: That young girl, the mother of that baby, she's 16. The same age my mother was when she had me... And then gave me up for... For adoption.

Brett: She seems completely healthy, but I know the protocol is to take them to the hospital.

Hannah Asher: Yeah. Amber checked out with this little girl just a few hours ago.

Brett: Was Amber's mother with her?

Hannah Asher: No. No, the baby was doing well, so we had to let them both go. It was Amber's decision... Now that she has technically been abandoned, we'll give her another once-over and then wait and see if it's Amber or DCFS that comes to get her.

Brett: Did you know she took the baby to a firehouse?

Georgia: No, but if it was your firehouse, that's the smartest thing that girl could have done... Amber told me how you two came back to check on them... Said the blonde one tucked the covers around the baby like it was her own... Guess she asked someone at the hospital which firehouse you were from... Knew you would do the right thing.

Violet: By law, we had to bring her back to the hospital. And if Amber doesn't go back to get her in the next 72 hours, the Department of Child and Family Services will take her into foster care.

Georgia: Then that's the way it's gotta be... Amber has no interest in being a mother. She was here about an hour ago. Took off to be with her dad in Indiana for a while, get away from that idiot ex-boyfriend she has here.

Brett: Why didn't she leave the baby with you?

Georgia: Honey, I already had one baby girl, and she was more than enough trouble for me... I want nothing to do with that one.
